Unilabs Coimbra involved the interior remodel of a ground-floor unit within a mixed-use building to accommodate a multidisciplinary health diagnostics clinic. The clinic brings together specialties including pathological anatomy, genetics, clinical laboratory testing, and a primary focus on gastroenterology—a medical field dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
In addition to offering consultations, the clinic supports a wide range of diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), and endoscopic ultrasound (ecoendoscopy).
The layout is organized along a central corridor that guides patients and staff through a logical progression of spaces. At the entrance, a welcoming reception area leads to supporting functions including restrooms, storage, a break room, and the blood testing lab. Further along are a secondary waiting area, an administrative office, personnel locker and restroom facilities, and a dirty utility room. The final zone is dedicated entirely to gastroenterology services, with specialized spaces such as an endoscope reprocessing and disinfection room, a procedure room, and both primary and secondary recovery rooms.
Material selection played a critical role in the design. Light colors and clean finishes were deliberately chosen to convey a sense of hygiene and order—essential qualities in a healthcare setting. These materials enhance perceived cleanliness, support infection control through antimicrobial and non-porous surfaces, and improve lighting and visibility throughout the clinic. Just as importantly, they contribute to a calming and professional atmosphere that promotes patient comfort and supports clinical focus.
The result is a streamlined, hygienic, and patient-centered environment that supports both operational efficiency and high-quality care.
